Key Storylines
Back in Blue – The Boys in Gold will be the Boys in Blue against the New York Red Bulls as Nashville SC debuts The Heart of Nashville Kit this weekend in New Jersey. The Heart of Nashville Kit is available for purchase here.
Debut Galore – BJ Callaghan introduced five new Boys in Gold at Saturday’s Home Opener at GEODIS Park. Defenders Wyatt Meyer and Andy Najar started on the back line, while midfielders Eddi Tagseth and 19-year-old Matthew Corcoran started in the middle of the park. Ahmed Qasem, announced only four days prior to Matchday 1, came on as a substitute in the 77th minute against New England.
Meyer’s debut for Nashville was also his debut at the professional level.
“These are big moments for players [to play their first professional games for us,] and so it gives us great confidence and gives them great confidence that they’re prepared and that they belong here,” said head coach BJ Callaghan. “We know that, but I think having the opportunity to go out on the field and perform is like that last little bit of self-belief.”
Joe Says No x50 – Goalkeeper Joe Willis made history with Nashville SC on Saturday after securing his 50th clean sheet as a Nashville SC player. He’s also started in all 6 of Nashville SC’s Home Openers since Nashville started MLS play in 2020.
Scouting New York Red Bulls – The Red Bulls enter Matchday 2 following a 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati on the opening day of the season. It’s a disappointing start to the season for the New Jersey based club, who faced off against the LA Galaxy in last season’s MLS Cup Final.
The Red Bulls have added fire power to their squad since last season, however. The acquisition of Cameroon international Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as a Designated Player adds a veteran striker with nearly two decades of top-flight European experience. Choupo-Moting will look to combine with fellow Designated Player and European veteran Emil Forsberg.
