Nashville SC makes its return to GEODIS Park for a highly anticipated matchup against Inter Miami CF in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. CT.
Key Storylines
- Leagues Cup Final rematch – The Leagues Cup Final at GEODIS Park was the culmination of the revamped Leagues Cup. After a valiant fight from the Boys in Gold that kept Inter Miami down to six shots and one goal in regular time, Nashville SC ultimately fell in a PK shootout in front of the Supporters Section at the Castle. Nashville SC and Inter Miami faced off four times across all competitions last season.
- Scouting Miami – Inter Miami has made waves in Major League Soccer through their player acquisition over the last year. In addition to their big name stars, the club has added a handful of supplementary players that help facilitate their game plan. They are led by Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who coached Leo Messi at Barcelona and the Argentina National Team.
Inter Miami handed Orlando City SC a 5-0 loss last Saturday.
- Away goals and the return leg – Regardless of Thursday’s result, Nashville SC will travel to Ft. Lauderdale for the return leg. It’s important to note that the away goals rule is in effect, meaning that in the case of an even score line, the team with the most goals scored at the opponent’s home stadium will advance. This puts an extra emphasis on scoring goals in the opponent’s home stadium.
Players To Watch
Captain Walker Zimmerman made his first start of the season against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. He was subbed out at the 60th minute for Dan Lovitz, but the USMNT defender is slowly building up his fitness as the Boys in Gold head into Thursday’s high-profile matchup at the Castle. Zimmerman is a threat on set pieces and a stalwart presence in the backline for Nashville.
Julian Gressel has made a few stops around the league, including Atlanta, Vancouver, and Columbus. Now in his first season with Inter Miami, Gressel has been providing an attacking threat that compliments his teammates. He’s primarily played in the midfield, but with the recent departure of Deandre Yedlin to FC Cincinnati, Gressel may likely move to a right-back or right wingback role under Tata Martino.
