After a successful first round against Moca in the Concacaf Champions League, the Boys in Gold make the trip to the Centennial State on Saturday to face off against the Colorado Rapids at Dicks Sporting Goods Park at 8:30 p.m. CT.
Key Storylines
- Colorado’s new look - After a rough season that saw the Rapids finish bottom of the Western Conference and second-to-last in the Supporters Shield standings, Colorado was active in the player market during the offseason. They brought in a handful of new players into the Rapids’ squad, including USMNT players such as goalkeeper Zack Steffen, left-back Sam Vines, and midfielder Djordje Mihailovic. According to MLSsoccer.com, the club brought in a whopping 14 new players.
- Three out of three against the Rapids – Since entering the league, Nashville and Colorado have faced off three times across all competitions. Neither team has secured a clean sheet in those matches, but the Boys in Gold have outscored the Rapids 9-3. This weekend’s trip to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park will be the team’s first visit to Colorado since May 28, 2022.
- Nashville SC in the Western Conference – Last season, the Boys in Gold didn’t travel to a Western Conference matchup until June 3, a 2-1 win over FC Dallas. This season, Nashville SC has two trips out west in March, with the next trip to the Western Conference coming on July 7th against the Portland Timbers. The Boys in Gold hold an overall MLS record of 17W-12L-14D against Western Conference opposition.
Players To Watch
McKinze Gaines, Nashville’s new number 17, is a tricky winger who made his Nashville SC debut off the bench against the New York Red Bulls in the opening MLS game of the season. He played 90 minutes and scored his first goal in a Nashville jersey against Moca in the return leg of the Round of 32 at GEODIS Park on Wednesday.
Djordje Mihailovic will want his home debut for the Rapids to go better than the opening match of the season did (4-1 loss to the Portland Timbers). Look for his impact on the match, as the midfielder played 90 minutes in his debut against the Timbers. He’s also wearing the number 10 on his back, an indication that the club rates him highly as a player.
