Key Storylines
- Undefeated on opening day at the Castle - Nashville SC has never lost a home opener at GEODIS Park. The Boys in Gold earned a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union in 2022 and a 2-0 win against NYCFC to open the 2023 season. After Nashville’s 3-0 win over Moca FC in the Dominican Republic on Thursday, the Boys in Gold will look to maintain their opening day record in league action.
- Dru Yearwood faces a familiar foe - New acquisition Dru Yearwood could face off against his former team on the opening day of the season. The 24-year-old midfielder joined the Boys in Gold on Dec. 11 in exchange for $75,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM), and up to an additional $75,000 in conditional 2025 GAM. Yearwood made 90 MLS appearances for the Red Bulls before his move to Music City, and already logged 80 minutes in his Nashville debut against Moca.
- Revenge game - These two teams last met on Decision Day in 2023. Red Bull fullback John Tolkin scored a stoppage time penalty kick to snatch three points at the death, securing the Red Bulls a post-season Wild Card match. The Boys in Gold have yet to beat the Red Bulls, with the head-to-head record standing at 0-2-2.
Players To Watch
- With Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar coming off injured in Thursday’s match, the Boys in Gold will look to other attacking players in the squad to carry the load going forward. Boyd showed he has no problem with that extra weight on his shoulders after he scored his first goal in a Nashville jersey and put in a Man of the Match performance on Thursday.
- Emil Forsberg will make his MLS debut for the New York Red Bulls at GEODIS Park after joining the Red Bulls from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. The 32-year-old attacking midfielder made 243 appearances for RB Leipzig from 2015-2023. He also has 21 goals in 86 appearances for the Swedish National Team.
