Godoy set to make his 100th international appearance for the Panamanian National Team
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 6, 2020) – Nashville Soccer Club announced today the international call-ups for Aníbal Godoy and Randall Leal by the Soccer Federations of Panama and Costa Rica, respectively, for their upcoming friendlies.
Leal will be the first one to compete with Costa Rica as they face Qatar on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Just two days later, Godoy and Panama will take on Japan on Friday, Nov. 13 and the United States Men’s National Team on Monday, Nov. 16.
Godoy’s next international appearance will mark his 100th match with Panama’s National Team. The 30-year old leader has patrolled the midfield for his country for the last decade after making his Senior Team debut on March 2, 2010.
During his tenure with Panama, Godoy started in all three 2018 FIFA World Cup Group matches and led Panama to two Gold Cup Finals in 2013 and 2015. The midfielder played all 120 minutes in Panama’s victory in penalty kicks over the United States Men’s Soccer National Team in the 2015 Gold Cup Final.
In his first season with Nashville, Godoy has been an anchor in the midfield appearing in 19 matches for the Boys in Gold, racking up over 1,400 minutes and leading the team to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in its expansion year.
Leal has become an electric mainstay at the international level for the Costa Rican camp and for Nashville SC. The 22-year-old made his Senior Team debut on Sep. 7, 2018 in an international friendly against South Korea, and since then he has recorded 16 caps in his career. The dynamic midfielder has helped Costa Rica reach the Quarterfinals of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which includes a 120-minute performance in it against Mexico.
Leal has been the offensive sparkplug for Nashville SC in the club’s inaugural season in MLS. As of Nov. 6, the Costa Rican midfielder has recorded three goals and four assists in his first campaign. Leal is currently riding a stretch of matches where he has recorded a goal or an assist in five of his last six matches.
This season Leal has been named to the MLS Team of the Week three times, leads the team in assists along Dax McCarty and is the team leader with 41 shots attempted and 18 shots on goal.
Nashville SC will wrap up its inaugural MLS campaign this Sunday on Decision Day, presented by AT&T, when the club visits Orlando City SC at 2:30 CT. The match will be broadcasted live on CW58, ESPN 94.9 for English radio and El Jefe in Spanish.
